ABOUT CAPE TOWN SURFING

Founded in 2001, Cape Town Surfing is one of South Africa’s longest-running and most respected surf schools. With more than 180,000 surfers coached, we’ve built our reputation on world-class instruction, deep local knowledge, and a genuine love for the ocean.

Based in Hout Bay and operating across Cape Town’s best surf zones, we offer professional surf and SUP lessons, coaching, guiding, rentals, and retail — all delivered in a safe, fun, and welcoming environment. From first-time surfers to elite competitors, we help people of all ages and abilities unlock their potential in the water.



LIAM WOOD - FOUNDER & HEAD COACH


Liam Wood has been surfing since the age of 12 and brings over two decades of elite-level experience as a professional surfer, coach, team manager, and surf industry leader. He has surfed extensively around the world, competing in WQS and European Surf Tour events, while representing Western Province and captaining the Britain & Irish Surf Team.

Over the past 20+ years, Liam has coached many of South Africa’s top surfing athletes, worked as SA Surf Team Coach, managed professional surfers on the WQS & WSL World Tour, and collaborated closely with some of the world’s most respected surfers, coaches, managers, and sports psychologists.

He holds the highest surf coaching and instructor qualifications in South Africa, including ISA Level 1 & 2 and SSA Level 1 & 2 coaching certifications, and has a strong background in sports marketing and team management with one of the world’s leading surf brands.

Liam currently serves as Western Province Surfing President, WP & South Africa Head Coach, and continues to coach national-level and professional surfers. His hands-on experience at every level of the sport — from beginner lessons to international competition — shapes the coaching philosophy at Cape Town Surfing.

Driven by a lifelong passion for the ocean, surfing, and open spaces, Liam stepped away from a career in design, marketing, and sport management to build a team dedicated to sharing surfing in its purest form.

Cape Town Surfing is a fully registered and insured surf school, offering professional surf and SUP lessons, coaching programs, tours, and rentals, led by South Africa’s top-qualified instructors (ISA & SSA Levels 1–3, First Aid certified).

Through our association with Cape Town Surf / SUP Adventures, Hout Bay Boardriders, and Llandudno Boardriders, we support and serve the entire boardriding community — surfers, SUPers, bodyboarders, young and old, beginner to advanced.
